Lisbon Airport received the award for best airport in the ’25 – 40 million passengers’ category at the 16th annual ACI EUROPE Best Airport Awards 2020, overcoming other leading airports in the continent such as Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport.

The ACI EUROPE Best Airport Awards are an annual awards ceremony which recognise excellence and outstanding achievement across a whole range of criteria, including 5 traffic categories of airport, including the brand-new ‘over 40 million passenger’ category. They also include the Eco-Innovation Award, the Accessible Airport Award, the Digital Transformation Award, the HR Excellence Award and the World Business Partners Recognition Award. This year, the awards were held virtually in light of the ongoing pandemic.

The latest award recognition is another positive for both the city of Lisbon and Portugal which has continued to innovate and discover opportunities despite the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this month, Portugal was named ‘Europe’s Leading Destination’ for an incredible fourth consecutive year at the World Travel Awards in which it received a total of 27 award wins at the event.

At the ACI EUROPE Best Airport Awards, the judges awarded Lisbon Airport the prize as they considered it the airport which excels in ensuring a contactless and safe passenger experience, namely with the rollout of the ‘Biometrics on the move’ project and the introduction of advanced UV disinfection technology.

Lisbon Airport also received praise and recognition for its strategy of leveraging team skills to foster innovation, in partnership with Portuguese universities, while using passenger feedback to continue to improve the safety and health measures in place was also highly commended.
