CML’s Rail Service Celebrates a Year of Service

The team at CML are celebrating one full year of running multiple weekly FCL shipments via rail, after completing their first ever rail freight delivery from China last September.

The 4,957-mile inaugural journey along parts of the old Silk Road from Shenyang in China to Duisburg in Germany took 18 days to complete, nearly two weeks quicker when compared to general far east sea freight and provided CML with the perfect solution when it needed to move its clients stock quicker.

October also marks six months since the team’s inaugural LCL rail shipment.

The advantages of shipping by rail over sea and air are already being embraced by retailers and manufacturers alike. But with the restrictions on rail bookings traditionally requiring shipments to be FCL, this service has allowed smaller consignments, originally planned as air shipments, to be despatched by rail. This reduces costs and provides a greater array of shipping options to smaller importers and high value brands whose volumes of exclusive products are insufficient to meet FCL requirements. Sharing space in a rail container with other shippers has allowed importers to beat ocean freight transit times whilst minimising the impact on unit costs.

By offering this service to its clients, CML is able to provide a complete end-to-end solution as CML’s Freight Operations Manager, Pat Treanor, confirms:

“After completing our first rail freight delivery from China last year the uptake on our rail services from existing and new clients was phenomenal, so it was an inevitable conclusion that the rail product would evolve far more quickly than the operators anticipated. It is no surprise that we are now able to offer LCL rail services for our clients providing a door to door transit time of around 28 days. Being able to offer our customers this form of transportation not only allows us to give our clients the most competitive rates, but shippers can benefit from a much greener solution within their supply chain, helping to meet their environmental goals.”

CML’s expansion into LCL rail freight shipments reinforces the company’s position as an industry leader taking innovative steps towards more efficient freight forwarding.
