Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) today announced its support for the publication of a new UK Department for Transport (DfT) report highlighting the important role that the UK’s port network and the connecting inland infrastructure play in the health of the UK economy. The report, Transport Infrastructure for our global future - A Study of England's Port Connectivity, is an important first step in underpinning the case for future investment to improve the efficiency of England’s inland transport networks to support future global trade. “G&W’s UK-based companies, including Freightliner and Pentalver, already move more than one million containers per year to and from major ports via their rail, road and terminal networks, providing direct and reliable services that connect UK businesses to worldwide markets,” said G&W UK/Europe Region CEO Gary Long. “We welcome the proposal for a new ‘virtual’ team that the DfT are establishing to consider the future strategic and investment requirements for transport corridors from the ports via multi-modal platforms.” The report also highlights the success of the Strategic Freight Network (SFN) Fund which has a record of delivering incremental changes to the rail network to support the growth of rail freight. Moving freight by rail supports £1.6 billion per year of environmental and economic benefits to the UK and frees up capacity on the road network for other users. G&W looks forward to working with the DfT to make the future case for enhancements to rail capacity and capability in Control Period 6 (2019-24) to continue this success.
