Maritime Transport Ltd (Maritime) is an unrivalled success story within the transport industry. When John Williams, Group Managing Director, acquired the business in 2001, Maritime was a regional container transport operator with limited market share and just 136 vehicles. Today it is a national logistics giant and a market leader within the container industry, and is now able to offer their customers so much more after successfully diversifying into a number of other related sectors. One of Maritime’s most prosperous diversifications came in 2011 when they entered the domestic distribution sector by purchasing 100 curtainsiders. In the six years since, they have witnessed rapid growth and now boast a depot network of 27 sites, 12 of these attributed to distribution; a 24/7 operation, 364 days of the year. “There was an opportunity for us to take the plunge into the previously unchartered waters of distribution,” said John Williams, Group Managing Director. “We were confident we had the knowledge and the skillset to expand our business and add great value to the services we were able to offer our long-standing and loyal customers.” Optimistic about their new venture, Maritime could never have predicted the exponential growth they have experienced in the years following. Winning several large contracts with blue chip, household names, Maritime’s success has been recognised and benchmarked by customers like Procter & Gamble, who awarded them ‘Haulier of the Year’ in 2016, and they have proudly collected ‘Road Freight Operator of the Year’, voted for by their customers, for two consecutive years at the Multimodal Awards. Maritime’s impressive statistics speak for themselves and despite being a relatively new venture for the business; the distribution arm expects to be at 50% of the annual turnover by the end of 2018. “The success of our business relies on our ability to react quickly,” said Dave Boomer, Managing Director – Distribution. “Our scale provides us with the flexibility needed to support our customers through their peaks and the know-how from our experienced members of staff provides vital support, whether we’re based on-site with a customer or if we’re managing their operation from one of our many sites throughout the UK.” As the needs of their customers grow and change, Maritime have extended their range of services in the international supply chain by providing highly innovative and price competitive solutions. Following a successful start with their curtainsider operation, Maritime introduced warehousing and cross-dock storage solutions – another area of the business which has grown and offers their large customer base peace of mind throughout their whole supply chain. Earlier this year Maritime were successful in gaining their largest distribution contract to date; a win which has seen them add a fourth site to their network portfolio in the South East. With the contract starting in July, Maritime have introduced over 150 new members of staff, 100 new vehicles and 125 new trailers to their operation; all of which are chilled; their first of this specification since their diversification. Whilst it’s clear operationally Maritime have shown their ability to deliver, as an ambitious business, they continue to move forward, introducing and investing in new technology to ensure they remain at the forefront of the industry. Owning a strong distribution fleet of over 300 vehicles and 600 curtainsider trailers, Maritime replenish their vehicle assets every three years, taking advantage of new technologies available, improving both vehicle safety and efficiency. As a business committed to sustainability, savings made through increased fuel efficiency and improved safety records are invested back into the Company, providing stability and security to its staff and customers. With growth for their distribution arm currently forecasted at 35% for 2017, Maritime’s success within the sector shows no signs of abating and with their seventh anniversary looming, it’s clear their decision to build upon the bread and butter of their offering, originally container transport, has been a huge benefit to the Company, and the industry.
