What experience do you personally have within the freight forwarding and logistics industry?

Originally coming from a shipping background (short sea and deep sea) I became more involved in the freight forwarding and logistics industry when I joined former client Seawing International in 1996.  This is where I turned poacher from gamekeeper.  It was a very steep learning curve, gaining a greater understanding of the need for added value and service than I had previously.  During that time the growth of technology within the forwarding environment expanded rapidly and many forwarders that didn’t embrace these technical developments got left behind.  Many faulted when the financial crisis occurred years later.  Forwarders that could remain lean in terms of resources but flexible in terms of service provision were able to grow their business and ride the wave of financial crisis.

How did you end up in the forwarding industry?

My original career path was focused on joining the Metropolitan Police.  However, by pure chance a close friend of mine who was working in the forwarding/shipping industry needed some help due to heavy workload.  From there I fell into the industry very unexpectedly.

How do you deal with new customs regulations for stored cargo?

We pride ourselves on our ability to maintain knowledge of developments within customs formalities to ensure we are always at the forefront of our customers’ needs.  Therefore we are active members in many forums of our industry, to not only educate ourselves but to influence developments as they occur.

How have you seen the warehousing and storage sector develop over the last few years?

Both warehousing and forwarding seem to continue in a cycle driven by customer demand.  Greater visibility, flexibility and competitiveness are key aspects of these demands, therefore our industry must deliver continuous improvement and embrace technology to meet with customer needs.

Does a lack of space ever have you worried when it comes to WHSE?

We regularly review our contingency plans in order to ensure that our capacity is in line with our forecast volumes of activity.  However, this is very reliant on good two-way communication lines with our clients to empower us to address potential peaks when they are on the horizon.

What specialised services do companies tend to go for now?

In recent years service excellence, connectivity and visibility in order to empower our clients to meet their own clients’ needs are the most important developments of recent times.  This is demonstrated with the growth of online activity, where direct delivery is surpassing retail deliveries.

How have your distribution methods changed over the years?

Capacity sharing with other specialist providers in partnership has been one of the most fundamental changes over recent years, and I for one see these collaborative skill-sharing developments becoming more paramount.

How has technology impacted the way you work within freight forwarding?

Technology has been one of the biggest changes and continues to be a main driver of forwarding development.  Clients now expect online access, with greater EDI connectivity between their systems and their service providers, combined with the demand for real-time traceability will continue to drive forwarders to develop such technology.

Have you had to deal with more complex freight types in the warehousing sector over the last few years?

The basics of warehousing and forwarding remains the same, although clients do like to complicate processes in their drive to reduce costs.  We continue to build our business on the principal of keeping it simple.

What advice can you offer a company looking for the best warehousing and storage facilities for the requirements?

Our industry has a wide spectrum of capabilities, therefore it is best that the client understands what their true needs are, as opposed to their wishes, to find the best solution to their requirements.  Once these objectives have been established then companies such as Imorex are able to provide the correct solutions for that client.

Do you have any specialised distribution methods?

All our service offerings are bespoke for each client’s needs: we don’t believe in one size fits all, as each client has different needs to their supply chain.  Our expertise in customs formalities, warehousing including BRC standard, ERTS and specialist cargo handling provides us with the ingredients to design most solutions competitively.
