KUALA LUMPUR, 10 August 2017 – MISC Berhad (MISC) today announced its five-year Sustainability Strategy through the release of its 2016 Sustainability Report, highlighting the Group’s sustainability performance across a series of Economic, Social and Environmental (ESG) performance indicators over the 2016 financial year and an analysis of the Group’s response to issues that are most important.
MISC believes in the importance for the maritime industry to embrace the future of sustainable shipping whereby shipping companies should strive to proactively prepare, adapt and embrace the opportunities that emerge from the industry and global environment. With this in mind, sustainability principles have been embedded as part of MISC’s corporate aspirations, business practices and operations to ensure that MISC will be better positioned in managing its non-financial risks, identify and increase efficiencies, as well as enhance its position and reputation in the industry.
Commenting on the Sustainability Strategy, Mr. Yee Yang Chien, MISC’s President/Group CEO, said:
“At MISC, we are committed to integrating sustainability into the heart of our business, where our efforts create value for our stakeholders. This will give us new opportunities to build business resiliency and add value across our Group. We are proud that we have achieved another significant milestone in our sustainability journey with the launch of the MISC Sustainability Strategy which runs parallel with our Vision and Mission as well as our five-year Corporate Strategy, MISC2020. With a focus on enhancing MISC’s social integrity, improving our environmental stewardship and creating economic value for our stakeholders, the MISC Sustainability Strategy serves as a manifesto of our sustainability commitments in conducting business as a responsible corporate citizen in the next five years.”
The content of MISC’s 2016 Sustainability Report is shaped by its Sustainability Strategy, which represents the Group’s identified sustainability pillars of Customers, Shareholders, Governance & Business Ethics, Employees, Environment and Community. These pillars will be the main structure of the Report on its achievements in the coming years.
“This year, we will witness the rollout and implementation of the various strategic initiatives that are targeted to be completed by 2020. Moving forward, we will continue to share our sustainability progress across the six pillars under the MISC Sustainability Strategy,” Mr. Yee added.
The 2016 Sustainability Report is the Group’s third stand-alone report that covers the Group’s sustainability performance, initiatives and achievements that complements the disclosures in the MISC’s 2016 Annual Report. The report was prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and demonstrates the Group’s commitment to continuous improvement, increased disclosure, risk assessment and expanded stakeholder engagement.
